Central to Fei’s artistic concerns is the relationship between inner psychic states and external systems of power. Their work considers how trauma is shaped by cultural narratives, migration histories, and social structures, and how these forces might be made visible through constructed worlds. Rather than treating healing as linear, Fei approaches it as iterative and fragmented, unfolding through repetition, play, and reinterpretation.
Fei’s interest in interaction, action, and movement stems from a desire to centre narratives of trauma around agency, autonomy, and hope. In contrast to media representations that often linger on explicit detail in ways that can be re-traumatising, Fei is more concerned with the ongoing effects of experience, how events are held in the body, psyche, and relationships over time. For Fei, healing is understood as the gradual return of agency: a process of becoming unstuck and recognising one’s capacity to shift present conditions.
I acknowledge the Burramattagal people of the Darug nation as the traditional custodians of the land on which I live, work and rest on. I acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. I pay my respects to the elders past and present. Always Was, Always Will Be, Aboriginal Land.
